Professional Painters...Do I need to clean my nicotine stained walls before priming for paint?

I am painting a lighter color over a dark color so I will use primer first. Do I need to clean the nicotine off the walls before priming or does it matter?Professional Painters...Do I need to clean my nicotine stained walls before priming for paint?
if you use kilz as a primer, no

any other primer, yes

nicotine will even bleed through zinsser which is one of the bestProfessional Painters...Do I need to clean my nicotine stained walls before priming for paint?
Better safe than doing it twice. Use TSP solution on the walls. It takes off greases, oils, and the edge off the nicotine smell.(cause that is why you are painting it, right?) Let the walls dry a couple hours if using an oil based alkyd primer (the route I would go). Water based primer is just not gonna hide the nicotine(if any is left) and there will be some left. Let the primer then dry a good 2 days and then go over with a latex finish coat to the color you desire. A couple drops of vanilla extract mixed in the paint will hide smells even more.

This little bit of fussing here will ensure you don't have to do it again because it ';still stinks';
Yes you do.That is a oily,sticky substance that paint ,whether oil,water base or even primer will not stick to. I know, it didn't on what I tried it on. I even knew better,but did it anyway. Had to start all over again with more work to boot!
depends on how much nicotine is on the walls, but to be safe, wash down the walls then prime them.
i did when i moved into my old house.the walls were bad, i washed then used a primer sealer first then painted.this is the stuff i used
