Do you have the pre-papered wall panels? If so that paper can be removed. The plastic strips between panels can be removed and the joints taped, filled, and feathered like a regular drywall job. Imperfections get fixed with joint compound.
After the paper is off you have a couple joices. Prime and then paint or apply a skim coat of joint compound on the panels, lightly sand them, prime, and paint.
