How do you Remove Permanent Marker from a wall or what paint can go over it?

How do you Remove Permanent Marker from a wall or what paint can go over it? In a few days I will be helping my friend paint his room and there is Permanent Marker on his wall from when he was a kid. I am an artist and I've tried to paint over permanent marker before on canvas but it seems to come through the paint as a purplish colour. That was with Acrylic Paint.

What are some solutions to this problem. I suggested sanding his walls to get it off, but there is alot of it, and if there is an easier way, all the better.

he suggested priming the wall as well, but I'm not sure how many layers of paint will be needed before the marker does not come through and we don't have alot of time to spend repainting. We're not sure what kind of paint to use either. Probably the cheapest we can find because we're trying to save money.

Is there anything we can use to wash it off the wall or is there any kind of paint that we can buy that will not allow it to come through?

Thanks. How do you Remove Permanent Marker from a wall or what paint can go over it?
Go to your local box store and buy Kilz. It is the best stuff to use if you need to cover a large area.

Magic eraser may work too, but Kilz will cover the whole area quickly, if you have a lot of marks, you will be scrubbing for a long time. How do you Remove Permanent Marker from a wall or what paint can go over it?
Magic Eraser that thing really works magic
magic eraser or try finger nail polish remover.
try useing Mr. Clean Magic Erasers they took Paint off my car... really good if that doesnt work i donno... you might end up repainting..sorry

good luck!
Spot prime over the marker with BIN. Its a shellac base stain blocking primer. Then prime the whole room with a high quality primer. I like Benjamin Moore Fresh Start acrylic primer. Allow adequate drying time before applying any finish coats. Overnight is best. Do 2 finish coats on the ceiling, then 2 finish coats on the walls, then the trim. Use high quality brushes and rollers. Sand everything lightly with 150 grit before coating anything.
MR CLEAN mAGIC ERACER WORKS GOOD AND I DIDNT KNO PPL ACTUALTY DO THAT
Have you tried Mr. Clean Magic Eraser? You could use 2 coats of primer, maybe grey, and 2 coats of paint.
Yes, Yes, Yes, get the Magic Eraser.

It works by basically sanding the surface that you are ';erasing'; but it is such a light sanding that it (usually) does not remove the surface.

It works EXCELLENT on painted walls. Just don't push too hard because sooner or later you WILL remove the paint. I did this once when I was trying to ';erase'; something that was actually a ding in the wall- the ding went right through all the paint.

They say not to use it on glossy surfaces because it will dull them but I have had luck on a few glossy surfaces including the top of my chest freezer and my kitchen counter. The kitchen counter took a lot of ';erasing,'; as I needed to use more than one Magic Eraser but the thing is amazing. It's your solution, for sure.
Goo B Gone works miracles
Use the paint called Kilz. It is used to cover areas well. It is not water based so you will have to clean brushes with paint thinner. After a couple coats cover with whatever paint you want. also have you tried finger nail polish remover on the spot!
