What is the meaning of '; Post No Bill'; painted on the walls along the street ?

This signage i have often seen in the walls along the street, public and private walls among others.What is the meaning of '; Post No Bill'; painted on the walls along the street ?
Means you shouldnt be putting signs up. Like advertismentsWhat is the meaning of '; Post No Bill'; painted on the walls along the street ?
It means that you shouldn't tack a whole bunch of money on that wall because it would encite a riot and people might get hurt in the stampede.
It simply means that NOTHING is to be posted .
';Bill'; means handbill and it is a poster or advertisement, usually dealing with movies or theater shows, but could be anything, even bumper stickers. In New York City the problem was such that poles supporting traffic lights and street lamps would be completely covered with various small notices and scraps of paper. With time these things tend to become partly unstuck and the light pole looks like a vertical trash heap. Last year I noticed that these poles had been resurfaced to a height of about 8 feet in a black, bumpy stucco-like paint that has a slighly slippery surface to which it is absolutely impossible to adhere any sort of sticky paper, and it seems to work very well. The ';post no bills'; stencilling on the temporary plywood enclosures erected around construction sites are usually cover in short order with movie posters. ';Post no bills'; translates to ';Paste your poster here';.
it means ';don't put any flyers or posters on this wall';
It means that no one can put up an advertisement there.
