I want to tile my kitchen wall, but it have paint on it , will it hold?

If the paint is clean and grease free the tile will bond just fine and hold excellent. In fact it ll hold to where you ll tear out chunks of dry wall should you have to change it later.. You can use either a thin set or a mastic. Both will hold excellent. Thin set it cheaper but harder to work with if your a novice. Mastics costs more but are much easier to work with for a novice. You don t need to replace the wall board in this non wet area. Over your sink, although it may get splashed, is considered a non wet area.

In fact, tile specs call for at least a painted surface ( at least primed) for any glues such as mastics or thin sets to bond well.

From my experience with ceramic tile, it is always best to replace the portion of wall with one of two products called Hardie backer(a fiber board) or Durrock( a cement board) for a better bond. They will also provide a better bonding surface for the mastic to hold the tile in place and tile companies recommend that you place the tile 4 to 6 inches above the joint in the wall replacement. You also have to use a tape called Meshtape, it is a mesh type wallboard tape that has an adhesive side to it that sticks without any glue or wallboard compound.Good luck with your kitchen job.I want to tile my kitchen wall, but it have paint on it , will it hold?
in short YES you can use Mastic and it will stick just fine there is no need for any fancy work to be done I have installed a whole lot of tile and Mastic does not care if there is paint or not.
rent a sander from Lowe's or a local hardware store, sand it down or just get some paint thinner and remove the paint before putting up the tile.
If you use organic mastic(Like Glue)which is sold for tile, rather than thinset mortar it should stick just fine. obviously, if the paint is loose it won't work.
